(CNN) Liverpool risque d'être expulsé de la Coupe de la Ligue anglaise pour avoir aligné un joueur non éligible lors de la victoire 2-0 du mercredi 3 février au troisième tour sur MK Dons.
Selon certaines informations, le milieu de terrain espagnol Pedro Chirivella, entré en jeu pour la seconde moitié de la victoire, a procuré au champion européen un match prestigieux face à Arsenal lors des 16 derniers matchs du tournoi à élimination directe.
Chirivella, qui jouait pour la première fois pour Liverpool depuis mai 2016, a été prêté au club espagnol de deuxième division Extremadura pour la deuxième moitié de la saison dernière, ce qui signifie qu'il aurait dû obtenir une nouvelle autorisation internationale à son retour dans son club d'origine l'été.
Liverpool a demandé cela en juillet, mais le processus ne peut être complété qu'avec l'intervention de la Football Association et il n'est pas clair si les documents nécessaires étaient en place.

La Ligue anglaise de football (EFL), qui gère ses compétitions de coupe, a déclaré qu'elle "examinait actuellement la question", dans un communiqué.
L’EFL dispose d’un éventail de sanctions allant de l’amende à l’exclusion de la concurrence.
Liverpool a réagi aux informations en publiant sa propre déclaration.
"Le club est au courant d'un problème administratif potentiel concernant l'un de nos joueurs", a-t-il déclaré.
"Nous travaillons avec les autorités compétentes afin d'établir les faits et nous ne ferons aucun autre commentaire jusqu'à ce que ce processus soit terminé."
Maintenant, Sunderland, de troisième rang, a enfreint les mêmes règles en 2014 en engageant le joueur non éligible, Ji-Don Won, dans quatre matches de Premier League anglaise et un match de Coupe de la Ligue.
